Dr Willeford was a physicist before becoming a physician. He graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo California and worked as an aerospace physicist with satellite communications before going to medical school at George Washington University where he was class vice president. He then completed an Anesthesia Residency at University of California at Davis. He was the first anesthesiologist in Brunswick County beginning in 1992. He served as Director of Anesthesia for over 10 years and was also elected to medical staff leadership and served as Chief of Staff and was on the Board of Directors of Brunswick Community Hospital.

In 2004 he left to do a Pain Medicine Fellowship at Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania and returned to be the first fellowship trained interventional spine physician in Brunswick County beginning in 2005.

Dr Willeford has continued an academic career while in private practice. He has written books, completed clinical trials, published scientific articles, and invented medical devices.
